Killarney Twin Towns
Killarney and Kendal became twin towns in September 2004. Kendal is both a tourist and industrial town, situated in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, six miles from junction 36 of the M6 Motorway. It is the Southern gateway to the Lake District being only 9 miles from Windermere and 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are only within an hour of two travelling by car. Kendal is a rapidly expanding town with a population of approx. 30,000.
The Lake District attracts walkers, climbers, cyclists and canoeists. Kendal has two national parks, 2 castles and 2 museums and a host of historical buidings. It hosts many festivals throughout the year, e.g. Mountain Film Festival, Music Festival, Torchlight parade, Big Chill Swim and Great north Swim.
Saint Avertin, France
The twinning link between Killarney and Saint Avertin was established in September 2004. Saint Avertin is located in the Loire Valley Region in the eastern centre of France, 4km from Tours, the old capital of France. It has a population of approx. 14,000. Popular places to visit nearby include Chateau de Villandry (17km) and Amboise at (19 km). Paris is located 205 km from Saint Avertin.
Pleinfeld and Killarney became twin towns in October 2007. Pleinfeld is a municipality in Bavaria, Germany. It is the largest town on the Great Brombachsee and is beside Gunzenhausen which is the main tourist destination in the Franconian Lake District. Pleinfeld has a population of approx. 8,000.
Lake Bromachsee offers diverse possibilities for bathing and swimming, water sports, cycling and walking. The Franconian Lake District is a fantastic holiday region, with seven storage lakes, also offering splendid beaches, excellent leisure centres, water sports and boat trips. It also is great for cycling and hiking.
The town twinning relationship between Killarney and Staffanstorp was established in October 2008. Staffanstorp is the seat of Staffanstorp Municipality, Skane County, Sweden. It is a town with a population of approx. 15,000. Staffanstorp is located in western Skane between the two cities of Malmo and Lund. It is a typical residential district dominated by detached houses built in the second half of the 20th century, where from most people commute for work in the nearby cities of Lund and Malmö. Staffanstorp is an idealistic place to grow up in, to raise a family and to get old in and when one wants to do something more exciting like shopping, go to the theatre, concerts or cinemas one can easily travel to the near by cities of Malmö, Lund or Copenhagen.
Staffanstorp was certified as A Safe Community by the World Health organisation (WHO) in 2007.
Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy
The twinning link between Killarney & Castiglione di Sicilia was established in 1986. Castiglione is located in the province of Catania in Sicily. It has a population of c. 4000 and the town is situated c. 621m above sea level. It is located near the foot of Mount Aetna (Volcano) 3348m.
The Concord Sister Cities Association was established in 1991. In 1993, Killarney was chosen as Concord’s first Sister City. Concord is a city in the state of North Carolina with a population of approx. 84,000. It is effectively a suburb of Charlotte. Concord offers an excellent variety of entertainment and leisure for visitors, e.g. shopping spree, taking in the beauty of the historic district or attend one of NASCAR’s largest races and special events at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Concord has a diverse economic base that includes distribution, manufacturing, racing and professional services.
Killarney Golf and Fishing Club are formally twinned with Rocky River Golf Club in Concord – the joining of two premier golfing facilities.
Cooper City and Killarney are sister cities since 2003. Cooper City is an 8.5 square mile ‘bedroom’ community located southwest of Fort Lauderdale in South Florida. Springfield is the capital of the US State of Illinois. A Sister City relationship was inked between Springfield and Killarney in 1996/97. It is a city with a population of approx. 117,000. It is dotted with sites associated with Abraham Lincoln who started his political career here. Springfield is the headquarters for several nationally known insurance companies, as well as over a hundred other state, regional and national associations. The community is recognized as a leader in the fields of health care, services and education. It has a vibrant arts scene, notable dining places, shopping and plenty of recreational options.
Castleisland Twin Towns
A Twinning link between Castleisland/Sliabh Luachra and Bannalec in Brittany, was formally established in 2007. Bannalec has an approx. population of 5,300. Bannalec is a small market town, very like Castleisland, about thirty minutes from beautiful beaches and old medieval cathedral cities like Quimper, Rennes and Vannes, and the world famous standing stones of Carnac. There have been numerous exchanges between the two communities.
