St Patrick’s Festival Killarney Cancelled
The organisers of the St Patrick’s Festival in Killarney have announced that the 2020 St Patrick’s Day Parade and other festival events have been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus threat.
The Government has moved to cancel all the parades in the country in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
It follows a meeting of the new cabinet sub-committee on Covid-19 and advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Paul Sherry, who was chairman of the St Patrick’s Festival, said it is hugely disappointing but the decision was necessary in the best interest of public safety.
“It was always our intention to follow the advice of all public agencies, including Kerry County Council, the Health Service Executive and the Government, in relation to large public gatherings and events,” he said.
“St Patrick’s Day is always the traditional start of the tourist season in Killarney and the parade is a wonderful and colourful community celebration but it is common sense, given the circumstances, that we cancel,” he said.
