Parking is available at Derrycunnihy Church which is directly opposite Galway’s Bridge. The walk begins at this point following a rugged oak forest down towards the Upper Lake. In the summer months you can be sure to see boats whizzing by on the Upper Lake, on their way to Lord Brandon’s Cottage.
You can meet the boats at Lord Brandon’s by following the gravel path by the Upper Lake for approx. 2km, which is ideal for some light refreshments. The next hurdle is to cross the Gearhameen River, you can’t miss this enchanting 6 arch bridge. And finally, the tarred road trail will bring you to the center of the Black Valley. Enjoy the views!
