Free Guided Stained Glass Windows Tours for Visitors and Locals
1 June, 2015 - 31 August, 2015
St Mary’s Church of Ireland is unique in that it alone can claim to be the location of the original “Church of Airne”. St Mary’s Holy Well, 50 metres from the current church was most likely pre-Christian in origin and therefore a place of worship for centuries, if not millennia, before the birth of Christ. This setting, therefore, was the obvious place to erect the earliest Christian church and the current building is just the latest in a series of churches at this spot.
The stained glass windows of St Mary’s are wondrous works of art which are very accessible to the surveyor as they are almost at eye level. These windows – dating from 1874 – tell many stories from the Bible and every Saturday throughout the Summer a free guided tour of the windows is held at 10 am and 11 am led by Canon Brian Lougheed and Mike O’Sullivan. There are also some very interesting local connections which will be explained during the tours.
With a throughput of over 40,000 visitors each year St Mary’s has a long established visitor footfall, but it is hoped that 2015 will see an increase in the number of locals taking the tour to see and hear the stories of the windows.
The Greatest Story Ever Told and it’s free – what are you waiting for!
