A Best-Practice Approach to Sustainability

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is dedicated to developing and adopting best practices for sustainability, working closely with external stakeholders to ensure a balance between growth and the protection of our natural and national treasures. Our globally recognised reputation for delivering exceptional visitor experiences goes hand in hand with our commitment to sustainable tourism.

Killarney is a town renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes and deep cultural heritage, and we are committed to preserving this beauty for generations to come. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, with a collective effort from the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, local businesses, and the community.

To further drive these efforts, the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has established a dedicated Sustainability Group. This team is actively developing and implementing new projects to support the town’s sustainability plan, ensuring that innovative, impactful initiatives are brought to fruition. Their work reflects Killarney’s ambition to lead the way in creating a greener, more sustainable future for Ireland.

As a founding member of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF), we collaborate with public and private sectors to promote sustainable tourism throughout County Kerry. By taking a unified approach, KTIF ensures that the needs of the environment, businesses, and communities are carefully balanced.

While sustainable practices come with challenges, they are essential for preserving Killarney’s unique environment and maintaining the prosperity of our local businesses and community.

Through Fáilte Ireland’s capital projects and strategic partnerships, we are implementing innovative solutions to enhance visitor experiences, create jobs, and safeguard Killarney’s timeless natural beauty.

Our flagship initiative, the Killarney Destination and Experience Development Plan (KDEDP), is a five-year strategy designed to:

  • Extend the tourist season.
  • Position Killarney as a leading sustainable tourism destination.
  • Protect the places that are home to our stories, communities, and authentic experiences.

Together, we are working to position Killarney as a benchmark for sustainable tourism in Ireland.

Recognising the importance of reducing transport emissions, we are actively working to install more fast EV chargers throughout the town. This ensures locals and visitors can travel sustainably while exploring all that Killarney has to offer.

The Killarney Urban Farm, a unique project located in the heart of town, provides fresh, hydroponically grown produce to local businesses, cutting down on food miles and embracing innovative, sustainable agriculture.

Killarney is proud to be at the forefront of innovative waste reduction initiatives with the successful launch of the Coffee Cup Deposit and Return Scheme. This groundbreaking project has eliminated millions of disposable cups from our waste stream, showcasing the power of simple yet effective solutions in tackling waste.

By replacing single-use cups with a reusable deposit and return system, Killarney has significantly reduced its environmental footprint while setting a benchmark for waste reduction in the tourism industry. This initiative not only benefits the local environment but also serves as an inspiring example for other towns across Ireland to embrace similar measures.

These highlight the potential for communities nationwide to implement practical solutions that contribute to a greener Ireland. As more towns adopt these sustainable practices, we can move closer to a future where Ireland is recognised as a leader in eco-conscious tourism and community-driven environmental stewardship.

Community Engagement and Business Adaptation

Killarney thrives on collaboration, and we are empowering our community and businesses to adopt greener practices:

Sustainability Training for Businesses

Workshops and resources provided by the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce help businesses integrate sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency upgrades and the elimination of single-use plastics, into their operations.

Community-Led Sustainability Projects

Initiatives such as community led tidy towns, tree planting, and energy-saving campaigns allow residents to play an active role in protecting Killarney’s natural beauty.

As the gateway to Ireland’s first National Park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Killarney takes its responsibility to safeguard biodiversity seriously:

Killarney Mountain Meitheal

This volunteer group works tirelessly to remove invasive rhododendron from Killarney National Park. Their efforts are crucial for protecting native ecosystems and preserving the park as a sanctuary for wildlife and visitors alike.

Eco-Friendly Transport Options

Bike rentals, including electric bikes, and designated cycling and walking trails throughout Killarney, provide sustainable ways for visitors to explore Killarney’s stunning landscapes.

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has set an ambitious goal of making Killarney Ireland’s most sustainable town by 2030. By investing in renewable energy, enhancing community involvement, and fostering innovation, we aim to create a destination where visitors can enjoy unforgettable experiences while knowing their impact on the environment is minimised.
